An AFM file, short for Adobe Font Metrics, is a plain text file that stores measurement and spacing information about a font. It is commonly associated with older Adobe Type 1 fonts, which were widely used in professional publishing, graphic design, and printing workflows before modern font formats like TTF and OTF became more common. An AFM file does not contain the actual visual shapes of the letters. Instead, it provides technical details that help software understand how the font should be spaced, positioned, and printed accurately.

In a Type 1 font system, the actual letter shapes are usually stored in separate files such as PFA or PFB files, while the AFM file works as a companion file that stores the font’s metrics. These metrics may include character widths, kerning pairs, bounding boxes, cap height, x-height, ascenders, descenders, italic angle, font name, font weight, and other layout-related information. For example, the actual font file tells the computer what the letter "A" looks like, while the AFM file tells the computer how wide that letter is, how tall it is, and how much space should appear around it.

boxshot-filemagic-bronze.pngAFM files were important because accurate spacing matters in design and printing. Without proper font metrics, text may not line up correctly, letters may appear too close or too far apart, and printed layouts may not match what appears on screen. Kerning information is especially useful because it controls the spacing between certain letter pairs, such as "A" and "V," which often need to be moved closer together to look natural. This allowed publishing and printing software to calculate line breaks, page layout, and text positioning more precisely.

You can open an AFM file using a basic text editor such as Notepad, Notepad++, Visual Studio Code, Sublime Text, or TextEdit on Mac because the file is usually saved in readable plain text. However, opening an AFM file will not show a font preview. Instead, you will see technical font data, such as the font name, character measurements, spacing values, and other metric information. This makes the file readable, but not very useful for normal users unless they are working with fonts, design software, printing systems, or font conversion tools.

An AFM file usually cannot be installed or used as a working font by itself because it does not contain the actual letter outlines. For more information regarding AFM format have a look at our own web page. To use the font properly, the AFM file normally needs to be paired with the real font file, such as a PFA or PFB file. Modern font formats like OTF and TTF usually include both the letter shapes and font metrics inside one file, which is why most users rarely encounter AFM files today.
